How ZORYVE Works

ZORYVE clears plaque psoriasis without steroids

ZORYVE's active ingredient, roflumilast, inhibits phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4), an enzyme that may play a role in causing conditions like plaque psoriasis and eczema when the body produces it in excess.

By modulating PDE4, ZORYVE balances the skin's immune system to decrease inflammation that drives eczema and plaque psoriasis.

Recommended for:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis (seb derm) and plaque psoriasis of the scalp and body

  • Patients looking for a steroid-free alternative to topical corticosteroids

  • Patients who need longer-term topical treatment without steroid-related risks

  • Dermatologist-directed topical therapy for hair-bearing skin areas

Your dermatology provider will review your skin and confirm whether ZORYVE Foam is the right fit before prescribing.

Many patients experience rapid symptom improvement with ZORYVE.

Is there a generic version of ZORYVE Foam?

No, as of 2026, there is no FDA-approved generic version of ZORYVE Foam available in the United States. Roflumilast topical foam is currently only available as the brand-name product ZORYVE, manufactured by Arcutis Biotherapeutics.

This is why the ZORYVE Direct Savings Card and the Arcutis Cares patient assistance program exist — to make the brand-name medication accessible while no lower-cost generic alternative is on the market. Honeydew will help you access whichever cost-assistance program you qualify for to minimize your out-of-pocket expense while a generic is not yet available.

Can children use ZORYVE Foam?

Yes, for both approved indications, though the minimum age differs:

Seborrheic dermatitis: ZORYVE Foam is FDA-approved for patients ages 9 and older. It is not approved for children under 9 with seborrheic dermatitis.

Plaque psoriasis of the scalp and body: ZORYVE Foam is FDA-approved for patients ages 12 and older. It is not approved for children under 12 for this indication.

If your child has seborrheic dermatitis or scalp psoriasis and meets the age threshold, Honeydew can facilitate a consultation. A parent or guardian must be present for initial consultations for patients under 18. If your child's situation requires special accommodations, contact info@honeydewcare.com and the care team will assist.

Can ZORYVE Foam be used on the face or beard area?

Yes, ZORYVE Foam is specifically approved for use on all hair-bearing skin areas, which includes the scalp, beard, eyebrows, mustache area, and other facial areas where seborrheic dermatitis commonly presents. This is one of the practical advantages of the foam over cream-based treatments, which can be difficult to apply to facial hair areas.

Seborrheic dermatitis frequently affects the face, particularly the sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, and areas covered by facial hair, and ZORYVE Foam can be applied to these areas once daily. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and inside the nostrils.

If facial seborrheic dermatitis is your primary concern, mention the specific areas affected during your Honeydew consultation so your provider can give precise application guidance.

How long does ZORYVE Foam take to work?

Most patients begin to notice improvement in flaking, itching, and redness within the first two weeks of daily use. In the STRATUM clinical trial for seborrheic dermatitis, approximately 92% of patients reported feeling relief from their condition within 4 weeks, and nearly 80% achieved treatment success at week 8.

For scalp psoriasis, the ARRECTOR clinical trial showed that 66.4% of patients achieved scalp clearance success at week 8 of once-daily treatment.

Results vary by condition severity and individual skin response. If you haven't noticed meaningful improvement after four weeks of consistent use, contact your Honeydew care team. Your provider may assess whether a dosing adjustment, combination approach, or different treatment is more appropriate for your situation.

Does ZORYVE Foam require prior authorization?

Most insurance plans require prior authorization before covering ZORYVE Foam, given its cost as a specialty branded medication. This means your dermatologist must submit documentation showing the treatment is medically necessary for your condition. Some insurers may also require step therapy as documentation that other treatments were tried first before approving a newer branded topical.

This is something Honeydew handles entirely on your behalf. Your provider prepares and submits prior authorization documentation, follows up with your insurer, and coordinates with the pharmacy so your treatment isn't delayed by paperwork. If your initial authorization is denied, we guide you through the appeals process and can help you access the Arcutis Cares patient assistance program or the ZORYVE Direct Savings Card in the interim.

How does ZORYVE Foam compare to VTAMA for seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis?

Both ZORYVE Foam (roflumilast) and VTAMA (tapinarof) are once-daily, steroid-free prescription topicals for inflammatory skin conditions, and both are prescribed by Honeydew's dermatologists. They're frequently compared because they occupy the same category (newer non-steroidal alternatives to topical corticosteroids) but they work differently and are approved for different conditions.

Mechanism: ZORYVE is a PDE4 inhibitor, blocking the enzyme that drives pro-inflammatory signaling in skin cells. VTAMA is an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonist, working through a completely different pathway to reduce inflammation and normalize skin barrier function.

Indications: This is the most important practical difference. ZORYVE Foam is approved for seborrheic dermatitis and plaque psoriasis of the scalp and body. VTAMA cream is approved for plaque psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (eczema) but is not approved for seborrheic dermatitis. If seb derm is your condition, ZORYVE Foam is the more appropriate option of the two.

Formulation: ZORYVE Foam is designed specifically for hair-bearing areas and leaves no residue. VTAMA is a cream formulated for body skin surfaces.

Side effects: ZORYVE Foam's most common side effects include nasopharyngitis, nausea, and headache. VTAMA's most notable side effect is folliculitis (irritated hair follicles), which is less commonly associated with ZORYVE.

Since Honeydew prescribes both medications, your dermatologist will recommend whichever is more appropriate for your specific diagnosis, skin type, and insurance coverage.

Is ZORYVE Foam flammable?

Yes, this is an important safety consideration unique to the foam formulation. The propellants used in ZORYVE Foam are flammable. You should avoid fire, open flames, and smoking during and immediately following application until the foam has fully dried on your skin and hair.

This means don't use the foam near lit candles, gas stove flames, or cigarettes right after applying. Once the foam has fully absorbed and dried, the flammability risk passes. In practice, applying the foam as part of your morning or nighttime routine (away from open flames) is the straightforward way to manage this safely.

This flammability risk applies only to the foam formulation. ZORYVE Cream does not carry this warning.

What is the difference between ZORYVE Foam and ZORYVE Cream?

They contain the same active ingredient (roflumilast) but are approved for different conditions, different patient ages, and different areas of the body. Choosing between them depends entirely on what you're treating.

ZORYVE Foam 0.3%: Approved for seborrheic dermatitis in patients ages 9 and older, and for plaque psoriasis of the scalp and body in patients ages 12 and older. Designed specifically for hair-bearing skin (scalp, beard, and body). Applied once daily as a leave-in foam.

ZORYVE Cream 0.3%: Approved for plaque psoriasis in patients ages 6 and older. Can be applied to intertriginous areas (skin folds, groin, underarms) where steroid use isn't appropriate.

ZORYVE Cream 0.15%: Approved for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema) in patients ages 6 and older.

ZORYVE Cream 0.05%: Approved for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in children ages 2 to 5.

The key point: if your primary condition is eczema (atopic dermatitis), the cream is the appropriate formulation. The foam is not approved for eczema. If your condition is seborrheic dermatitis or scalp psoriasis, the foam is the right choice. Your Honeydew dermatologist will prescribe the correct formulation for your specific diagnosis and affected areas.

Can ZORYVE Foam treat scalp psoriasis or scalp seborrheic dermatitis?

Yes and this is one of the most important things to know about the foam formulation specifically. ZORYVE Foam is designed for use on hair-bearing skin, making it particularly well suited for scalp conditions where cream-based treatments are difficult to apply and can feel heavy or greasy.

For scalp psoriasis, ZORYVE Foam is FDA-approved for plaque psoriasis of the scalp and body in adults and children ages 12 and older. In the Phase 3 ARRECTOR clinical trial, 66.4% of patients treated with ZORYVE Foam achieved scalp clearance success at week 8, compared to 27.8% of patients using a vehicle foam without the active ingredient.

For scalp seborrheic dermatitis, ZORYVE Foam is FDA-approved for adults and children ages 9 and older. The once-daily foam application leaves no residue, works on all hair and skin types, and requires no rinsing, making it significantly more practical for daily scalp use than most topical treatments.

If your psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis primarily affects your scalp, mention this during your Honeydew consultation. Your provider will factor the location and affected area into their prescribing decision.

What is seborrheic dermatitis, and how does ZORYVE Foam treat it?

Seborrheic dermatitis, often called seb derm, is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes flaking, redness, scaling, and itching in areas of the body with oil-producing (sebaceous) glands. It most frequently affects the scalp, face (particularly the eyebrows, sides of the nose, and beard area), ears, and chest. It affects more than 10 million people in the United States and can flare and recede over time, often worsened by stress, cold weather, or certain skin products.

ZORYVE Foam is the first prescription treatment approved for seborrheic dermatitis with a new mechanism of action in over two decades. It works by blocking PDE4, an enzyme that drives the inflammatory signals responsible for seb derm's characteristic flaking and redness, without the use of steroids. In clinical trials (the STRATUM trial), nearly 80% of patients achieved the primary efficacy endpoint of treatment success at week 8, and just over 50% reached complete clearance.

ZORYVE Foam is approved for seborrheic dermatitis in adults and children ages 9 and older. It's applied once daily as a leave-in foam to affected areas (scalp, face, beard area, or body) and absorbed fully into the skin without rinsing.

How much does ZORYVE Foam cost, and can I afford it?

ZORYVE Foam's list price is approximately $950 per tube, which can look prohibitive at first. Most patients pay significantly less, and many pay nothing at all. Here's how the savings programs break down:

With commercial insurance: Eligible patients can enroll in the ZORYVE Direct Savings Card, which can reduce your out-of-pocket cost to as little as $0 per prescription. Honeydew handles insurance verification and prior authorization on your behalf before you start, so coverage is confirmed upfront rather than discovered at the pharmacy counter.

Without commercial insurance: The Arcutis Cares Patient Assistance Program provides ZORYVE at no cost for financially eligible patients who are uninsured or underinsured. If you don't have commercial drug coverage, this program is worth exploring. Your Honeydew care team can help point you in the right direction.

Note that the ZORYVE Direct Savings Card is not available to patients covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or other government-funded programs. If you have government coverage, ask your Honeydew provider about alternative options or whether a different treatment may be more cost-accessible for your situation.

Honeydew's membership fee (starting at $25/month on an annual plan) is separate from medication costs and is HSA/FSA eligible. We handle prior authorization, pharmacy coordination, and insurance navigation on your behalf so you're not managing the cost process alone.

What is roflumilast, and is it the same as ZORYVE Foam?

Yes, roflumilast is the generic (scientific) name for ZORYVE. You may see "roflumilast" on your prescription label, insurance paperwork, or pharmacy receipt. It is the same medication. ZORYVE is the brand name manufactured by Arcutis Biotherapeutics.

Roflumilast works as a phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitor. It blocks an enzyme in skin cells that drives the inflammatory response behind conditions like plaque psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (eczema). ZORYVE Foam is the specific formulation designed for body skin surfaces, available in three concentrations matched to specific conditions and patient ages. There is currently no FDA-approved generic version of ZORYVE Foam available in the United States.

What if I’m under 18?

If you or your child is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian should be part of the initial consultation. In circumstances where this is not possible, please contact info@honeydewcare.com and we will assist you with alternate ways to establish parental consent.

Do you accept insurance?

We will run the prescriptions through your insurance and help you find the lowest costs out there. The membership fee and any products are also eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement.

What support can I expect from Honeydew?

We offer comprehensive support for our patients, including access to experienced providers, assistance with lab orders and the iPledge program (when needed), unlimited support, and progress tracking.
